DescriptionThis book offers essays on a number of the author's favourite operas, well known and little known. The theme that runs through them is that the contemporary productions of such works should respect the aims of those who created them - this book is not only about opera, but a call for a respectful way of presenting opera. As an historian, Nicholas Tarling has looked for and listened to what the librettist and composer were trying to do. Author descriptionNicholas Tarling is known to many New Zealanders as presenter of Opera Hour in the Concert Programme of the 70s, 80s and 90s, as a lecturer on study tours and as a writer of programme notes. He reviewed for New Zealand Opera News and for Opera Australia and still reviews for London's Opera magazine. In 2002 he published On and Off, account of opera in Auckland. |
